Die Kunst liegt dabei in der Harmonie der einzelnen Stoffstücke.Dagegen besteht der Quilt, wie oben schon erwähnt, aus drei Lagen und hat eher die Funktion der Wärmedämmung. Der Quiltstich entwickelte sich im Laufe der Zeit aber zum dekorativen Mittel. Durch ihn können Formen hervorgehoben und Muster erzeugt werden. Patchwork und Quilting werden heute oft im Zusammenhang miteinander verwendet. Bekannt sind vor allem Werkstücke wie Kissen, Decken oder Topflappen, die zum einen aus einzelnen Stoffstücken zusammengesetzt wurden, durch ein Zwischenlage ihre Funktion der Wärmedämmung erhielten und mit Hilfe des Steppstichs verziert wurden.
